Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: what each tier means and which factors move an applicant between them.
Carriers price term using rate class. Names shift slightly between companies, but the order is standard: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table ratings for higher risk. Tobacco users get a separate set at higher rates.
What underwriters look at
Build (height and weight ratio), blood pressure and cholesterol levels, family health history (heart disease or cancer before age 60), driving record, medicines you take, job and hobbies, and tobacco or nicotine use of any kind. Preferred Plus needs nearly everything clean; Preferred allows one or two items. Standard Plus and Standard allow some controlled conditions like managed high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question asks for honest self-assessment: Excellent means Preferred Plus, Very good is Preferred, Good is Standard Plus and Average is Standard. Underwriting confirms the actual class afterward. If you're unsure, run quotes at two classes to compare. Picking a higher class won't lower your final premium—it just makes your estimate less true.
Susman Insurance Agency knows which carriers are more favorable to specific medical histories, and that comparison often matters more than the lowest headline rate.
